What is improv comedy?

Improv comedy is a blend of a series of various comedy, theatrical and story-telling techniques. Seinfeld, Friends, How I Met Your Mother - all of the most famous television sit-coms are based on improvised comedy techniques.

It is very easy to learn - anyone can begin using improvisation techniques straight away as they have already had a lifetime of storytelling and making things up.

Improv is different from stand up comedy, which requires a lot of writing and is typically a solo activity. Improv involves being on your feet and participating straight away - it’s a team activity and is a great way to meet some new people.

Skilled improvisers will are expert listeners and are incredibly adept at thinking quickly on their feet. Most importantly, they make others around them feel good.

For this reason, many people learn improv to help them in every day scenarios and to improve their careers. Improv techniques will help you to exude charisma and be more confident when you’re in social settings.

The best thing about improv comedy is that unlike stand up, it is far less likely to offend. At our shows, no one in the audience gets picked on. Very rarely will you hear an improviser make a joke that is at the expense of a marginalised group.

And if your thinking ‘where’s the fun in that?!’, we will again point to sit-coms and their popularity. Our shows and classes are designed for those who want to have fun and enjoy themselves, without fear of prejudice or bullying from those onstage with microphones!
